Angels and Demons

My submission for the 100 Candles Contest at It's not every day a demon and an angel fall in love...

"We can't do this."
She gripped him tighly to her. "I know. The higher-ups will likely skin me alive... or strip me of my wings. Then I'd fall... like you."
"No." The word was a command, demanding her obedience. "I won't let you fall. I would rather spend an eternity with only the memory of this last embrace to sustain me than see you fall. It is out of the question."
She sighed, wishing she could hold him to her heart like this forever. Then, she smiled.
"Isn't this just the way, though? I bet the higher- ups never imagined that an angel and a demon could ever fall in love."
He smiled back. "You know, it probably never even crossed their minds." He leaned his chin up to peck her soft lips, softer than the feathers on her beautiful grey wings. She stretched them to enclose him, creating a cocoon for them both, away from the bright flashes of lightening.
"I have to say, I was pretty surprised myself."
He grinned into her lips. "Not me. I always knew there was a connection between us, but I never imagined you would feel it, too..."
